MAKALU
BASE CAMP
Rising 8463 m on the Nepal Tibet border is the
huge giant mass of Makalu, the world’s fifth
highest peak. Our approach to the seldom-visited
base camp area begins with a fight to Tumlingtar
in eastern Nepal. We follow well-defined trail
up the fertile Arun river valley . At the village
of Nun (909m) we take the trail north west up
to through small settlements and begin the sustained
ascent of the Barun La (4152m) On the way there
are views to the east of Kanchanjunga and Jamu
Himal. This trek can be counted as being extremely
remote in its upper reaches.
From Makalu Base Camp (4848m) we make side –
trip in the area and have excellent unobsecured
views of Makalu’s South face, an impressive
mountainscape of the north-east faces of Everest
(8848m) Lhotse (8516m), Baruntse (7220m) and Chamlang
(7275m). This trek is best to be undertaken between
October and late November before early winter
as snow cuts off access to the base camp area
though early March to late May will be equally
interesting. The base camp is at an altitude of
5,000m.
